Since 1983, Mike’s practice has been primarily devoted to working with hospitals and other healthcare clients in matters involving system development, compliance, physicians, antitrust, reimbursement, contracts, employment, tax exemption, corporate issues, and licensing and regulatory issues, including compliance with Medicaid, Medicare and Certificate of Need.
He also represents corporate and institutional clients in various labor and employment matters, including advising about employment laws and defending employers against wrongful termination and discrimination suits.
Mike played a key role in negotiating an $11 million settlement on behalf of an area hospital client in a dispute with the state Medicaid program and recently won a key decision in the Maine Supreme Judicial Court establishing absolute immunity for physicians who provide information to hospitals for credentialing and peer review.
Mike applies an analytical approach to solving clients' problems, and he believes strongly in finding practical, efficient and cost-saving solutions that will benefit them in the long-term.
He is listed in Best Lawyers in America® , and is a member of the Maine State and Androscoggin County Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice in all Maine state and federal courts, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Mike participates in a variety of civic and church-related activities. He regularly provides pro bono services to individuals and nonprofit organizations. He is a panel chair of the Fee Arbitration Commission of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar, currently is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Foundation of Maine and has served on the boards of L/A Together, Holy Cross and St. Dominic Schools and is a member of the pastoral council of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. He formerly chaired the board of directors of Catholic Charities Maine.
A native of Lewiston, Maine, Michael received his B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Maine School of Law.
