Benjamin Smith is a shareholder of the firm of Skelton Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, Maine. Ben concentrates his practice in:

Ben has more than 10 years of experience in the areas of public utility law and litigation. He represents utilities, businesses and other individuals and entities before the Maine Public Utilities Commission and other state and federal administrative and regulatory bodies.  Ben also represents  municipal entities and businesses before state and federal courts and administrative bodies.

Prior to joining Skelton Taintor & Abbott, Ben was a staff attorney for the Maine Public Utilities Commission where he served as a hearing examiner and advised the Commission in ratemaking, rate design, certificate of public convenience and necessity (CPCN), affiliated interest transactions and other matters involving Maine’s various electric, gas, and other public utilities.  He represented the Commission in wholesale electric matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the regional stakeholder process. He also served as a lead attorney in negotiations and litigation relating to contracts between the Commission and vendors for goods and services.

Ben also gained valuable experience at another Maine law firm where he was a litigation attorney and handled personal injury, products liability, domestic relations cases, as well as general civil and criminal matters. He represented litigants before state and federal administrative and regulatory bodies and served as appellate advocate in criminal, civil, and administrative cases.

Ben is active in his community and serves as selectman and property tax assessor for the Town of Chelsea, Maine. He formerly served as Chair of both boards. He has also coached the Youth Basketball League of Kennebec Valley YMCA, Augusta, Maine. 

Ben received his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law and his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Maine. He is admitted to practice in the state courts of Maine, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Ben is  a Registered Maine Guide in the areas of hunting, fishing and wilderness recreation and a licensed private pilot. In his leisure time, Ben enjoys flying, hunting, fishing, running, and other outdoor activities.
