Dench Presents Legal Ethics Seminar in Bermuda

Category: Firm News

Attorney Brian Dench presentationAttorney Bryan Dench of the law firm of Skelton Taintor & Abbott presented a continuing legal education seminar to the Bermuda Bar Association in Hamilton, Bermuda, on March 25th.

The subject was “Conflict of Interest Issues that arise when one client acquires another – The Corporate Affiliate Conflict.”  The seminar was an official presentation of the Bermuda Bar Association Continued Legal Education Committee given in partial fulfillment of the requirements of Bermuda law for attorneys.  It addressed the ethical dilemma faced by attorneys when a business they represent buys another business that is adverse to another client of the lawyer.  This can put the lawyer in the position of representing one client against another, creating a conflict the lawyer did not cause.

Attorney Dench was a member of the original Grievance Commission appointed by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court to review and decide legal ethics complaints against Maine lawyers, serving 11 years from 1979 to 1990.  He has also served on other ethics regulatory and advisory boards.  He has written and spoken extensively on the subject of legal ethics.  He has testified as an expert witness on legal ethics matters, including testimony before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

In his law practice attorney Dench represents clients in a wide range of matters including corporate and business advice, estate planning, taxation, municipal and school law and representation in administrative proceedings.  He has practiced with Skelton Taintor & Abbott since 1975 and is currently chairman of its board of directors.  Skelton, Taintor & Abbott is a full service law firm with offices in Auburn and Falmouth.
