Jill A. Checkoway

After 40 years with Skelton Taintor & Abbott, Jill Checkoway retired September 30, 2019.

Jill has more than 35 years of experience advising individuals and families about the types of estate planning most appropriate for them. She has helped clients with plans aimed at reducing potential estate taxes by using methods from relatively standard marital trust estate plans to more sophisticated estate planning tools, including continuing trusts for children, irrevocable life insurance trusts and qualified personal residence trusts.

As part of her probate practice, Jill worked with clients to meet probate timelines, comply with tax requirements and distribute the estate’s assets in an efficient and timely manner. She has extensive experience in working with complex estates that involve issues concerning closely held business assets, irrevocable life insurance trusts and real estate sales or distributions.

In all areas of her practice, Jill made it a point to be easily accessible to clients so she could promptly answer their questions and address their concerns.

A member of the Maine state bar since 1978, Jill is a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a former member of the Probate and Trust Law Advisory Committee.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, Jill grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. She earned her B.A. in 1974, summa cum laude, from Purdue University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Jill received her J.D. from Boston University in 1978.
