Our Commitment to Community

At Skelton Taintor & Abbott, we care deeply about the communities where we live and work. We are part of a civic-minded and charitable tradition that extends back 160 years, and we are proud to contribute to the arts, education, economy and health of central and coastal Maine.

ST&A attorneys currently support:

  • The March of Dimes
Every year, ST&A dedicates our fundraising efforts during the entire month of April to the March of Dimes campaign for premature babies and turn out in force for the Lewiston-Auburn March for Babies.
  • The Dempsey Challenge
ST&A fields a team every year for this bike and road race to support cancer treatment at the Dempsey Center at Central Maine Medical Center. And we don’t stop there—we contribute generously to the CMMC Fall Classic Golf Tournament.
  • Auburn Business Association
ST&A sponsors the Auburn Business Association’s Citizen of the Year event, its annual golf tournament and funds for the holiday decorations in downtown Auburn. One of our attorneys has served on the ABA board since 2012.
  • Chamber of Commerce
ST&A is a long-term stalwart supporter of our local Chamber, the largest in the state of Maine. Several attorneys have served on the board of directors and many have presented programs for local businesses on key legal topics. ST&A regularly sponsors Chamber events and was a founding sponsor of the Chamber Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament, which raised over half a million dollars in scholarship funds for local students. ST&A is also a member of the Jay-Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce and regularly sponsors breakfasts and presentations in support of area businesses.
  • Central Maine Human Resources Association
Several of our attorneys belong to this organization, including one who is an officer and on the board and has served as President.  This association strives to assist HR professionals in all the complicated issues they must address as well as provide programming for employers who do not have an HR professional on board.  CMHRA has collaborated with the LA Chamber and the Oxford County Chamber to provide programming to businesses across the region as well.
  • Maine High School Mock Trial Competition
We support the attorneys of tomorrow by coaching a team for this statewide competition and by funding an annual scholarship award to a senior member of the Lewiston High School mock trial team.
  • Maine Women’s Network
ST&A is proud of the significant role women play in our firm. Several of our attorneys are members of the Network and actively involved in programming and media assistance.
  • Maine State Bar Association
ST&A attorneys aren’t just members of the Association—they are section chairs and presenters at MSBA seminars.
  • CM Education Foundation
Continuing our support for public education, ST&A contributes annually to the CM Education Foundation to fund scholarships for students attending Central Maine Community College. Our attorneys have served on the Foundation’s board of directors and sponsor its annual dinner and scholarship golf tournament.
  • School Athletics
We have attorneys who take on  multiple roles assisting school athletics, including coaching teams even when their own kids have graduated, working on booster groups for cross-country running and Nordic skiing at Leavitt High School, and starting and then supporting events like the Leavitt Father’s Day 5K.
  • Community Little Theatre
ST&A is proud to support Maine’s “biggest little theatre” in its effort to provide education and personal exposure to the art of entertainment in the form of both musicals and non-musical productions. Our attorneys and staff have been performers, have worked backstage in lighting and design, and have served on the Board of CLT.
  • Bowdoin Mock Trial
We support the attorneys (and law students!) of tomorrow by coaching a team that has already competed at the regional and national level even though it was only founded in 2016.  Many ST&A attorneys also donate their time to judging Bowdoin’s tournaments and provide feedback and mentoring as “mock” judges. We are proud of building such a highly regarded legal practice in one of Maine’s historic mill towns. We continue to build up this community by taking on cases that matter, keeping costs low, and carrying on a tradition of excellence that goes back a century and a half.
  • Androscoggin County Bar Association
ST&A attorneys are leaders of the local bar—serving as officers of the Association and actively promoting the vibrant talent of the local legal community.
  • Public Service in Our Communities
Our attorneys even dedicate their “off” time to serving their communities.  Some are appointed  to local government boards, including local boards of assessment review. Other attorneys serve on local school boards and other civic organizations.
  • College Guild
Our attorneys volunteer to help inmates with homework for education programs.
  • Androscoggin Land Trust
ST&A attorneys have supported ALT through countless hours of volunteer work, with attorneys volunteering on the Board of Directors, providing pro bono services, volunteering at key events that support ALT’s mission, such as the Annual ALT River Race, and championing ALT’s conservation mission.  ST&A believes that ALT’s conservation work serves to enhance the livability and attractiveness of Androscoggin County and provides outdoor recreational opportunities for all who work, live, and play in Androscoggin County.
