AUBURN, Maine – Skelton Taintor & Abbott shareholder Sarah C. Mitchell will be a featured speaker at the National Business Institute™ Divorce Law Boot Camp, to be held at the Holiday Inn Portland-By The Bay on December 10, 2018. The day-long event will be a comprehensive, hands-on approach to divorce practice. It is designed for attorneys and may be used for continuing legal education credit. The program aims to provide real-life insights into divorce practice—from motions to agreements to valuation of marital property. Mitchell will lead two sessions, Experts in Divorce and Valuing and Dividing Assets.
Experts in Divorce will focus on what experts such as business valuators, accountants, appraisers, custody evaluators, mental health experts, financial planners, vocational experts and medical experts do and how to utilize them. Mitchell will discuss what is involved in working with experts and how to prepare them for testimony. Lastly, she will provide some sample questions that these experts will face on direct and on cross examination.
In the session Valuing and Dividing Assets, Mitchell will take attendees through issues pertaining to marital assets. Topics will include tracing commingled/transmuted assets, real property, QDROs (qualified domestic relations orders) and retirement plans, business valuations, life and health insurance, common mistakes in dividing assets and settlement traps to avoid.
